Flow of the Crowd
In this stop-motion animation, I focused on the constant movement of people
inside a shopping mall. The mall is a place full of energy, noise, and motion, yet
when I stood there filming, I felt a quiet sense of distance—as if I was observing life
from the outside. By capturing people walking in different directions, I wanted to
show the feeling of being surrounded by others while still experiencing a kind of
personal solitude.
I chose stop-motion because its frame-by-frame nature makes everyday
movement feel more rhythmic and intentional. The slightly unnatural motion
creates a sense of observation, like time is broken into pieces. This technique helps
emphasize the contrast between the fast-paced environment and the slower
emotional experience of the individual watching the crowd.
For materials, I used my phone to capture many photos inside the mall, keeping
the camera angle stable to preserve the flow of movement. The repetition of
footsteps, shifting shadows, and overlapping paths became the visual language of
my animation. Through this project, I explored how public spaces can make us feel
connected and disconnected at the same time.
